Why Physical Therapy Should Be Recommended During Pregnancy

Pregnancy and birth IS a physiologic event.

Meaning that as you are growing a baby in your womb AND as you are experiencing labor, your physical body experiences HUGE physical changes. It would make sense that physical therapy - a.k.a. the movement specialists - would have the ultimate potential to holistically understand your anatomy and mechanics of birth and therefore, be able to help you have a positive birth experience.

This is important for you because learning from a pelvic PT could help you:

reduce (or eliminate!!) risk of tearing

✅ reduce risk of unnecessary cesarean

✅ provide a PROACTIVE approach to pelvic floor health

✅ COACH you on how to prepare you body for the best possible birth outcome

For example, I had this client who came to me because she was TERRIFIED of giving birth. Like would she still be able to urinate normally, could she still enjoy s#x afterward, would she be able to tolerate the pain??

She worked with me and we addressed:

1) Mindset. We got clear on her own limiting beliefs or why she thought she would not be able to birth her baby. We discussed her ideas and beliefs around pain and I helped her to rewire her brain to think about pain differently.

2) Physiologic Birth. I taught her the necessary education regarding physiologic birth. She went into labor with some life-changing tools that she knew would help her cope with the sensations labor, she gained a deep understanding of how her baby was positioned and why that is important, and also how she could move to optimize the opening up of her birth canal.

3. Prenatal Labor Preparation Exercise. She was coached on how to do simple daily exercises that she knew would help her hips, pelvis, and uterus make room for her baby so that his descent into the world would likely be smooth and without complication.

Soooooo what were her results?

She ended up not having the birth that she imagined in her head - literally this RARELY HAPPENS!! However, do you want to know what she did say after the birth?

Meaghan made me believe I could birth a baby and I did. Now I have my beautiful baby, I feel calm, and I already know what to do to help my body heal
